Testing: Models Own Haul

What could be worse for someone that has a slight obsession with collecting nail varnish than a giant nail varnish bottle shaped Models Own store bang in the middle of the mall. Not only was it full of beautiful colours but there was also a sale on - 6 bottles for £15. I wouldn't usually spend more than £1.99 on each bottle, though Barry M can be an exception. Models Own usually cost £5+ so a bit out of my price range but this offer was far too tempting. Me and my sister split it and got three each, so I grabbed (left to right) an Aqua Splash NP16, 'velvet effect' Sardonyx NP176 and Cloud 9 NP189.

Cloud 9 NP189 Overall Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Consistency: ★☆☆☆☆
Drying: ★★★★☆
Durability: ★★☆☆☆

The first varnish I tried was the creamy 'Cloud 9'. The colour consistency was surprisingly weak for such a well known brand along with an original price tag placing at the mid to high end of the market. The varnish dries quickly and has a lovely subtle golden glitter effect in the light. The layers I painted were on the thick side but still waited for them to dry before adding another. Sadly when I checked the next day they had tiny bubbles which was a little bit of a let down. I will try again with 4 thin layers and see how that goes but for a varnish like this needing 4 layers is quite disappointing. Add a base and a top coat.. 6 layers is asking for insta-peel!

Sardonyx NP176 Rating: ★★★★☆

Consistency: ★★★★★
Drying: ★★★☆☆
Durability: ★★★★☆

I was pleasantly surprised when opening this varnish up. The consistency of the glitter was very very thick, which made the brush very swollen, so care is needed then applying to the nails, especially because red is a very hard colour to clean from the skin and nail, even with acetone. The sales assistant told me that this was 'velvet' effect, hence the lid is made from flock. Turns out that this is just glitter mixed in with matte nail varnish which gives a lovely effect. Obviously, because it's thicker it needs longer to dry but only needing 2 coats is wonderful.

The previous colour had only lasted less than a day so already this one has performed better. I added in a little stamping along with some rhinestones in the middle. Unfortunately the rhinestones started pinging off so I added a top coat of Seche Vite (my favorite!) to seal everything on, knowing that I would lose the matte effect. The result was not dissapointing in the slightest. With the top coat added it creates a super sparkly layer and looks like I've attached part of the ruby slippers to my nails. Both the matte and gloss finishes have their own beauty and this colour has proved to be very versatile. This is also available in a navy, green and black finish (I think) so I'm quite tempted to go get some more colours! The image at the top of the post is the finished result before the gloss top coat was applied and this one below is after the Seche top coat.

I'm yet to test the last one until these ones have started to show signs of wear or peeling. Until then I will happily gaze at the ruby slippers as they catch the light!
