Indecisions!

At the beginning I knew exactly what I wanted to do, which means 5 minutes later (once I've started) I change my mind or something doesn't quite work out. I have been wanting to use these little shell-like shards for ages, so made this set around that. Once it was all on though, it just didn't look right so I added a stamp to it which I think worked but may have been better to stamp in pale blue.

A guide to how I do my gradients can be found here: http://www.nailingtons.com/p/tutorials.html

After popping out of the house the shell nail literally shelled off and so I decided to paint it pale blue and paint on some details. However, during the clean up on the first plain layers I flinched which knocked the bottle of acetone everywhere and melted my lovely keyboard, and this time it's not salvageable. So, I gave up with this stupid set and getting rid of them asap! Grr!

Pure acetone + Keyboard = Melted down space bar and N key :(

The final one..

Goldie

My second attempt at using a nice pastel yellow went just as successfully as the first, by this I mean that once again the polish just refused to dry. This was not even a problem that Seche could fix as the polish consistency was so thin that it needed coat after coat. After realising it was beyond repair (4 coats later) I scrubbed it off and started with just one coat of white followed by one coat of the yellow. This wasn't perfect but the stamping seemed to even everything out and helped achieve the colour I had been hoping for in the first place, hooray! I went for two Jess polishes for the pinky and ring finger and as always they worked well and dried quickly. The stamped fingers were finished off by affixing a stud followed by a top coat of Seche, then the last two had the George Matte top coat.

The Bling-Yang!

I'm a bit late getting round to the NPQ challenge this week, which theme was set on yin-yangs and had to be painted with your non dominant hand.

Wiki's definition:
In Chinese philosophy, the concept of yin-yang, which is often called "yin and yang" is used to describe how opposite or contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world; and, how they give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another.

I had a search on Google and pondered keeping it more traditional but in my usual odd way, I decided to splatter my hand in glitter and gems along with making the pattern a little more geometric. I started with two layers of Hypergel followed by two layers of glitter last night. I needed to make sure it was dry so left it overnight and finished them off today. I cut a piece of masking tape to the appropriate shape, stuck it down then painted over it with the black. For some reason though it bled a lot today so I ended up having to hand paint the lines back on to make them more defined and less scraggly, though they are far from perfect. I then added on the gems with Seche and painted an extra layer for the top coat and to smooth it out. The ring finger was a little random and to be honest, I don't really know what went on there but needless to say, I just felt like adding more gems.

Oh, and turns out they do bottles of pure acetone in Poundland under the main title of 'Artificial Nail & Tip Remover'.. Bonus! Thank you @kateyey for telling me!

Monochrome Speedy Queen!

Just realised that I hadn't posted these to the blog, whoops! They are a few days old now but I'm getting through the backblog (har har.. hilarious I know). So on Friday evening I'd scrubbed off my nails and had intended to re-do them before the NPQ Hangout but Saturday had turned out to be a very busy day and so I arrived with naked nails to the mocking dismay of the other ladies :D. I quickly needed to fix this so I went with the 'easiest' combination of colours and spammed on the stamps within about 10-15mins, earning me the title of Speedy Queen..hooray! It was a great evening and nice to be able to chat with the other ladies.

It was literally a case of painting on the black, which was fast dry and quite thick, followed by the white polish with the stamping plates.

More Tentacles!

This was the one I planned to do originally before I got carried away last time with the glitter and gradients. Fairly straight forward with only using three polishes and a stamping plate from Bundle Monster, with a matte top coat. I wanted to add a shiny gem in somewhere but it just didn't seem to fit in!

Ombre Night Forest Nails

I used to hate doing ombre nails or gradient nails.. I'm not even sure what to call them any more so I'll call them.. ermm.. Ombient! All that mess with getting foundation sponges stuck to the nails and clumpy patchy-non-blending'ness.. it was a tad tedious. However, as they say, practice makes per- well not perfect but its a LOT easier than it used to be and much more fun. I still have the odd sponge drama but now I've ironed out the method and it tends to work just fine for what I'm aiming at.

The stamp I've used today is from Monster Bundle plate BM-407 and I loooove this pattern so much. I think I may just end up using it every day. I don't know why but the angular abstract forest scene really appeals to me so it's fast becoming one of my favorite plates, up there with the Konad string hearts pattern.

So as always I started with the base. Used a grey, navy and black for the gradient with an Allura foundation sponge (for some reason it has to be a specific diamond shaped sponge, I can't seem to get the same results with the others). Dab dab dab with the sponge refreshing the lines of polish every two nails. Then I use the clear base coat again over that to smooth it out and gently blend the gradient, though only one sweep of the brush. Once its all dry, on with the stamp and then Seche Vite to finish.

Mz Tentacle Nails

This posting is for a lovely and super sweet G+ friend of mine, +Mz Maau. She's really into her tentacles along with a love for pink and green, soooo I promised a set of nails with all this in mind. We have glitter and hearts galore with a few tentacles poking in here and there. I've got an actual tentacle stamping plate so I'll probably give that a go later in the week but for now I've gone with freehand.

Confused Nail Rage!

Well it took me all of 5 minutes to demolish my Valentines nails and so it was time to think about replacing them. I had a really pretty 'Buttercup' yellow by Revlon that I got in Poundland. Sadly it gave me nail rage. I did the first coat and it took forever to try and I smudged two in the process. Then I started again on those two and put the second coat on the others, smudging another one in the process and while trying to fix it smudged one of the original ones too. Grr! when I finally got round to choosing a stamp to put over I'd had the Pink Konad in mind.. buuut when I tried to stamp it, it wouldn't come off the stamp and then only half transferred to nail, meaning I had to re-paint the nail yet again! So I changed to another stamp, this time in black and the pattern didn't work out, then a different one and it looked silly. So.. you get the gist. After nearly finishing Lost In Translation while faffing about with the pretty insanely slow drying yellow I decided to ditch the whole thing and repaint in this 'Tangy Tangerine' by Rimmel and then use one of the plates that hadn't worked out on the yellow, this time in white. So to be honest, I'm not all that sure on why I did these, I'm not sure I like them that much but they are a little different to my usual sets and they can stay until tomorrow :). Rant over!

Valentines Nails v.3 - Happy Valentine's Day

I know I've done this style before but I just had to use this stamp again for today, and it's something that I wanted to do since creating the blue heart gradient/ombre (tutorial found here: http://www.nailingtons.com/2013/12/tutorial-blue-heart-gradient.html)

I started off with the white base, then painted the gradient lines on the foundation sponge and dabbed that onto the white until it was blended enough. Used a clear varnish to smooth and blend the gradient a bit more then waited for it to completely dry before adding the white heart stamp.

Testing: Models Own HyperGel vs George GelPro

Last weekend Models Own released a new batch of 'HyperGel' varnishes which are a gel effect product with no need for the UV light to 'set' it, so I thought it would be fun to test it against a similar product by George (ASDA). I've had to wait to post this until they started to show signs of wear and chips so I've not been able to do any new designs in between (grr!).

Models Own: HyperGel

Price: £5
Shade: SG006 Lilac Sheen
Consistency: ★★★☆
Drying Time: ★★★☆
Durability: ★★★

Very pleasantly surprised with this varnish. It's nice and thick, paints on easily and dries in a fairly average time. Needing only two coats is great and the finish is super shiny and smooth so there's no need for a top coat. The only negative for me really is the awful smell. Anyone that's used 'ColourB4' and smells this will know what I mean. After a few hand washes though it's not noticeable any more, so only a tiny niggle!

George: GelPro

Price: £3
Shade: 04 Nude Beige
Consistency: ★★
Drying Time: ★★★☆
Durability: ★★★

Beautiful nude colour with a very subtle golden sheen in the light. Sadly it's very thin! Even with three coats I'd still be tempted to add one more as it still looks a little see through. Drying time was average to slow but it made up for it by lasting almost as well as the Models Own and again, not needing a top coat. I think it may have been a slightly more fair test if I had have picked a darker colour but I love my beiges and went for one that I know I will use over and over.

As I was keeping them on until they began to chip I added a few little accents to the nails to 'pretty them up' a bit. Day one is shown above but day 3 and 5 are below. They've both lasted really well and I'm very happy with them though I do feel that the Models own polish is better slightly quality.

Day 3 - Still intact!

Day 5 - Oh no chips!

This is good in a way because it means I can scrub them off now and paint something new, yey!
Oh! And they scrub off just as easily as any other nail polish.

Valentines Day Nails v.2: Anti-Valentines Challenge

I had all these ideas of 'normal' Valentines nails I could do and then I saw the title of the NPQ challenge for this week and though...eeek! After doing a little bit of hunting on the Internet, I saw an image pop up in a feed that I just thought was quite 'cute' in an anti-valentines day way and hoped that I could translate it across to the nails. All of it is freehand except the black stripes - those are a simple line stamping plate. Everything else was drawn with a tooth pick :).

I started with two layers of white base, then a coat of Seche Vite to help protect those layers against any accidents with the black. Unfortunately when trying to draw the black stick cupid on it was making the polish behave strangely so I had to repaint a white layer to get it to 'stick' properly. The hearts are basically two blobs next to each other with the tip of the toothpick and then carefully join then up by dragging in a gentle V shape. Then I drew tiny little breaks in the hearts with the tip of the toothpick. Finished off with a -careful not to smudge anything- layer of Seche Vite.

Valentines Nails v.1

I've been meaning to do these for a while and I've finally got round to it. There's a lot of lovey dovey stuff going around at the moment (I have no idea why! *cough*) and so they will be the first of the Valentines Day themed nails.

The design originally came about when I needed to come up with something for the accent nail during a NPQ challenge and thought I'd fill a whole hand with them this time! The dotting is a little messy which is a bit of a shame but if I ever do them again I'll try harder. :)

Nail Art on a Budget: £1 Stamping Plate Set

So many things in the nail art world are costly. Many will tell you that to get the 'best results' you have to buy the most expensive brands. Not all of us can splash out on the best of the best over and over again. So, I've been pondering for some time whether or not to do a few posts on budget nail art. With a quick visit to Poundland out of the way, today is the day I begin.

Allura Nail Stamping Kit Overall Rating: ★★★★☆

I began stamping last year with a small Konad set which I love to bits. When you first start it's a little tricky to get used to but I've done a short tutorial, so if you are interested, it can be found here: http://www.nailingtons.com/2014/02/how-to-nail-stamping.html

So this little set here set me back..wait for it.. a whole £1! I've spoken to several people who've tried it and in their own words they thought it was 'shit' and put it straight in the bin.

In the set you get everything you need except the polish. I selected a 'normal' polish to test it with as most people are likely to have this type at hand although if it didn't work there was some Konad special stamping polish available.

I set everything out as suggested in the post linked above and used the same process as I always do.
The first thing I noticed is that there is a VERY subtle plastic protector on the plate, so that needs to be removed or the plate really won't work.

I was pretty surprised that it came out this well on the first try. To make sure I hadn't just picked a lucky design to print, I selected another to try.

Even under the macro lens it still faired well, so to be honest.. for £1 that's quite good!

Next I tested the stamper and scraper on a more expensive plate and once again, they did very well.

Overall, the little cheepy stamping plate did brilliantly. I've given it 4 stars because it worked well, the stamper and scraper are a real bargain, the instructions are short and clear and the quality of engraving is very good. I knocked off a star because there was no varnish provided. Its a good bit of fun to play with but if you are starting out I would still recommend the Konad set mainly because if you are unlucky and get a dud Allura set then it can put you off stamping completely, yet if you give it a proper go it can really open up a whole world of nail art creativity.

So, why do so many people tell me it's 'shit'?

  • Perhaps the plastic protector wasn't removed.
  • The nail varnish used for stamping was poor.
  • Process was too slow and varnish dried too quickly in the stamp.
  • Unlucky - plate/stamper was a dud!

I think that in most cases it's likely that the plate may have been a dud as you still find poor engraving even on more expensive plates.

Either way, it was great fun to test! Thanks Poundland!

Tutorial: Nail Stamping!

To begin stamping you will need:

1x Nail plate
1x Stamper
1x Scraper
Stamping nail polish
Nail polish remover
Protected hard surface

Nail plates come in a HUGE variety, although not often found in many shops on the high street. Your best bet is going online and searching amazon.co.uk to get an idea of the type of designs you can get in the packs. There are so many brands and variants that I find reading the reviews a great help and they can often be the deciding factor, along with the choice of designs. Generally I use Cheeky, Gals and Monster Bundle. Konad nail plates tend to be on the more expensive side so I only have a couple.

I would recommend a Konad starter kit from amazon/ebay as it will give you everything that you need to learn and practice. I've seen them appear in pound shops and although it's a great cheap alternative, I'm not sure how good they are. The nail plate engraving may not be high enough quality or the stamping varnish (if provided) may not remove as it should from the plate. I've now got one to try out so I'll be writing up a review soon.

Learning to stamp can be fiddly but once you've got the hang of it, it becomes a lot easier. No matter how experienced you are with them though you can still have problems if your nail plate is a dud or the polish you're trying to use isn't the right consistency. Environmental factors (heat) can also play a role in foiling attempts at the perfect stamp transfer.

The key to this process is speed. If you're not quick then the varnish will dry in the plate and you will have to start over. The more you practice, the faster you get.

How To:

1. Take a square of cardboard to protect the surface. I line my tools up as shown in the picture.

2. Place a pad of cotton wool soaked in nail varnish remover directly next to the plate and tools so that as soon as you scrape, you can clean of the excess and grab the stamper.

3. Either put a line of varnish along the bottom of the stamp design on the plate, or fully cover the design in your chosen stamping varnish. It's personal preference really but you waste less varnish if you just draw the one line and scrape up, but I like to be sure that it's in all the gaps so I cover the whole thing.

4. Take the scraper, place it evenly along the base of the design and scrape away with even pressure towards the cotton wool. You can then drag the scraper into the cotton wool to clean it and lessen the chance of mess getting everywhere.

5. Grab the stamper and press directly down on the plate in the centre of the design with even pressure. You do not have to push hard the design with come off with light pressure.

6. There are three options when placing the stamp:
- Line up the stamp with the edge of your nail and roll from one side to another.
- Line up the top edge of the stamp with the top of your nail and carefully use a rolling motion down the nail to the cuticle.
- Or finally you can try to line up the central part of the nail with the design and stamp straight down.

I've found that rolling up from the cuticle to the tip often results in the stamp being wonky or out of place so I'd go for the other options, however, it really does depend on angle, personal preference and nail/cuticle shape. You do not need press hard onto your nail, if you've suceeded the stamp will come off with ease.

Speed is important here as if too long is taken on placing the stamp to the nail, it will dry and remain on the stamp.

7. Clean the excess from the stamper by rocking it in the cotton wool, then 'screw' it into the palm of your hand. I don't know really why I do this but it seems to help remove excess acetone and help the next design to stick.

8. Make sure the design has had a chance to dry completely before finishing with a good top coat but be very careful with strong polishes or multiple strokes, they will drag and smudge the design.

9. Finally use the base side of the varnish remover soaked cotton to clean the plate and you're ready to start the next nail!

I hope this was helpful and made sense. It may not be the perfect way to do it but it works for me.

Ideally you should be using polish designed for stamping often called 'special polish' but you can get away with using thicker 'normal' polishes too. Finding out what works best is trial and error. Good luck!

Animal Print: Matching to Material!

I blame Sainsbury's. Me and my step mummy were out to do the weekly shopping and we came across this scarf shown in the image above. She loved it, I loved it and I decided that I wanted it on my nails. It didn't quite work out to plan but it's close enough. Next time I may go with hand painting the animal print instead of using a stamping plate as its all too close together.

Polishes

Base colour - Naked Truth Nailwear Pro+ by Avon

A closer version of the final result.

More O' Models Own

It's unfortunate but, yes.. It happened again!

On a routine mission to get my eye's tested I collided with the Models Own store at Bluewater. After the success of the Sardonyx (http://www.nailingtons.com/2014/01/testing-models-own-haul.html) I wanted to get some more of the Velvet Goth collection as they really are very pretty, and quite unique. I had a wonderful chat with the ladies who worked there about all manner of nail arty stuffs - it was so much fun. They were so, so kind about all my nail art and I found this a huge encouragement. I came away with more enthusiasm to do better and some nice new supplies including a nice bubblegum flavoured lip balm!

I'll test each in turn but for this mani I wanted to try and get as many of them on one nail as possible! I basically did two coats of the base NP150 Blueberry Muffin (which is one of the scented range), waited for it to dry completely which didn't take too long. I used the hole punch plastic thingies for the half moons then attached two bits of striping tape in a v-shape which formed the three sections. I filled those in with NP175 Absinthe, NP177 Amethyst and NP148 Southern Lights and removed the striping tape as soon as possible after the application to each nail. I was in two minds whether or not to add a rhinestone in but I just love these little green ones so.. in they went! Finished with a top coat of Seche Vite, sadly losing the matte effect of the Velvet Goth.

I was really impressed with the Blueberry Muffin after having a such a disappointing experience with the NP189 Cloud 9 varnish, however the ladies at Models Own did say to bring the bottle back in as it may just have been a dud, which was very kind indeed and I'll give it another test along with all the others as soon as I stop getting distracted by making patterns! :)

That's a whole lot of polish!

I've finally got round to updating the galleries! I'm not sure they're entirely in the best order possible but it's progress. Lots more to update but I'm getting there slowly but surely.

I gathered up some of the nail images from this computer and from what I can tell, there's been a lot of time spent with tiny bottles of paint recently..

There's a whole lot more to come, especially now that I have 6 more bottles of Models Own varnish to test out. Stopped into the MO store today to pick up more velvet effect, but got chatting to the ladies there and they were just so sweet! I'm still a nail-noob but they were so kind about my nail stuff.. it was really encouraging! They clearly love what they are doing and I love talking about nail stuff so it was really nice :).

More testing soon!

Chinese New Year: Round 2!

After taking a liking to the cherry blossom pattern on the thumb I went for a whole handful :).

Polishes

Snow Me White by Sinful Colours (Boots)
Black On Black by Sinful Colours (Boots)
Superhero by George (ASDA)
Shade No.41 by 2True (+Superdrug)

Method

Two coats of white.
Two coats of red for the accent nail.
Using the nail art brush with the very long, thin hairs, run the brush through a blob of black varnish (on some cardboard or similar) then create a thin line by gently dragging it across the nail, letting the line flow in its own direction. Repeat until you have the desired amount of brances.
Using a pair of tweezers, stab them into a foundation sponge, pinch in and rip out a tiny bit of sponge.
Keep the foam in the tweezers, dab it into a blob of red and gently dab very very gently on the nail to create the 'blossom' effect.
Affix the rhinestones to the nail using a toothpick and Seche Vite.
Top coat everything in Seche.
