A while back I was asked to write a review on these nail art pens I picked up in Primark and I've finally got round to it, yey!
Currently, I have three of the Barry M nail art pens and although they are fun I have a couple of issues with them. My main problem is that sometimes big gloops of the vanish inside just come flooding out onto the nail and ruin any pattern you've created and make a huge mess.. argh! There seems to be very little control on flow. This can also happen when pushing the nib down on paper to get more varnish to the end, which is a horrible waste. My other issue with them is that the nib is not quite fine enough for the detail that I'd like to be able to achieve, though that's not really their fault! Other than that, they're a great product and certainly add more versatility to the collection.
The pens cost £4.99 each so you can imagine my surprise when finding that Primark have branched out further into the nail art industry and introduced some new products in their
P.S. Love range, including a set of 3 nail art pens for only £2 per pack. Even if they are not perfect, at £2 it can't hurt to test. There are two pack options, one containing black, white and pink, the other containing silver, gold and mint green.
This is going to make me look like such a fool, but on getting them back and opening the packet, I couldn't work out how to actually open the pen itself. I tried pulling the end and not much happened. I had visions of pulling too hard, the whole thing snapping and me being left covered in nail varnish. So I gave up and finally managed to unscrew it. I was surprised to see that there was a type of nail art brush attached on the inside and suddenly thought that I'd misread the packet. It's not what I was expecting but it was still very useful!
I put it back together and continued to puzzle over why it had the appearance of a lid when there was no pen part. Eventually I was brave enough to just yank the lid off (it was very very stiff!) and was pleased to discover a very fine nib that obviously linked to the brush and varnish chamber. At the time I wasn't at home so they would need testing a little later..well.. now!
Today I once again had the struggle with the lids but it wasn't nearly as bad as the first time. I think once you know that you're not going to get splattered it's a lot easier.
I began with the black and just decided that drawing silly swirly patterns was the way to go. I think my black pen had had some 'gogogo' juice or something because the varnish was just pushing out as soon at the nib was down, so it put the pressure on to be speedy and careful. The varnish does come out raised so extra care needs to be taken when drying, I believe this is due to the shape of the nib.
Even with that tiny issue I found that out of the three, it gave the best results. The white had to be slightly squeezed to encourage the varnish to come out which meant my hands were a little more shaky and the pattern was not nearly as 'neat' (not that the black one is neat!!). The pink was a bold, beautiful colour but alas, the slowest to dry and first to get smudged so now I have a heart shaped splatter on my index finger :D. The added brush on the inside is a fantastic touch and just adds to the versatility of these products. I love them, they are brilliant.. especially for just £2 for all three!
So all in all, good strong, thick varnish that is relatively easy to draw with but be prepared to wait a while for it to dry - even with a top coat of Seche, the raised varnish may still be wet underneath and 'burst' if put under pressure, so handle with care!
